Safeguards
The following safeguards apply whenever you arrive at a fire that involves electric power lines, substations or other electrical equipment:
- Always wear full personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Identify any overhead power lines before extending ladders and aerial equipment. Designate a spotter to make sure you maintain safe clearances.
- Confirm the interruption and restoration of electric service with Rhode Island Energy.
Remember the 30/30/100 rule when protecting exposures during fires that involve electrical equipment: Stay at least 30 feet away from energized objects, and use a 30-degree fog pattern at 100 psi, NEVER a straight stream.
